As a company that creates branded video campaigns on Facebook, Involver would like to commemorate a big anniversary: Facebook celebrates its 5th birthday today!
Even by Silicon Valley standards, Facebook’s rapid rise has been astonishing. The stats speak for themselves:
- More than 150 million active users worldwide
- More than half of these users are outside of college
- More than 3 billion minutes are spent on the site each day
- More than 850 million photos are uploaded to the site each month (making it the largest photo site on the internet)
- More than 15 million users update their Facebook statuses at least once each day
…And so on. Relatively speaking, this amount of meaningful online engagement and interaction is absolutely unprecedented.
A number of news organizations and editorialists have offered their take on the anniversary: this week has brought a number of Facebook retrospectives and predictions. Our favorite article of the lot comes from BBC News. Among other things, it features some choice quotes from Dr. BJ Fogg, Director of the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab, a Fortune Magazine “Guru You Should Know About,” and a trailblazer in the field of persuasive technology.
We love this important reminder from Professor Fogg:
“The genius of Facebook isn’t the technology or the interface. Facebook is winning because it puts friends first. Our relationships shape our online experience. No technology is better than our friendships.”
And this, in sum, is why Facebook is winning over more and more digital marketers. When brands harness the power of the social graph, they aren’t leaning on a narrow technology or a novel interface. Rather, they’re leaning on the power of human relationships — the effectiveness of brand enthusiasm via sincere people-to-people marketing.
In any case, we just wanted to add to the chorus: Happy Birthday, Facebook!
