It’s official: Americans spend more time on Facebook than on any other site

By Nikki Serapio July 17th, 2009

This week brings two big announcements:

1) According to its own tally, Facebook now has over 250 million active users. The number reflects extraordinary growth: just three months ago Facebook pegged its user base at 200 million actives, and in January of this year the number was verified at around 150 million. In other words, in the last six and a half months alone, Facebook’s user base has grown 67 percent. (From April 2008 to April 2009, Facebook grew 700+ percent.)

2) Just as amazing, Facebook is now the stickiest site on the internet for U.S. users. According to a Nielsen Online report released this week, the average American internet user spent 280 minutes on Facebook last month. By this metric, Facebook has topped all of the other web heavyweights in just a few years time: it’s now stickier than Google and Microsoft web assets combined, Yahoo, and AOL.
