How to Set Up a Reveal Tab Using Static HTML
A reveal tab or fan gate can be a highly effective way to ask people to like your Facebook page before showing them further content. It’s also a way to welcome potential fans with information about your brand and incentives to encourage further interaction on your page. Involver customers at all levels can easily create their own reveal tabs using our Static HTML for Pages app. Here’s how:
1) Install Involver’s Static HTML app on your Facebook fan page. Go to http://involver.com/applications/, find Static HTML at the top and click Install. Choose your target fan page from the dropdown list. If you’re on a free plan and already have more than two applications installed, you will have to upgrade your account or uninstall one of the other two apps. If you’d like help, see our FAQ.
- Add your contact info to the Account Sign-up section. Edit the application settings and click the Save Changes button. Read the on-screen tutorial then click Continue to Fan Page.
- To show your application on your fan page, click Edit Page then select Apps from the list that appears to the left. Click on Edit Settings under the app you want to show and select Add.
- You should now see your Static HTML for Pages application in the left hand column of you fan page. If not, click More at the bottom of that list. You can drag it higher up the list by clicking Edit.
- To change your application settings at any time, click the Edit Tab Settings link in the top left-hand corner of your tab.
2) Design your reveal page. In choosing a design for your reveal page, there are several things to consider. Depending on how well-known your brand is already, the reveal tab can serve as either a first-introduction or a familiar icon to fans. Either way, it should be consistent in tone and style with the images you offer elsewhere. The image needs to be exactly 520 pixels wide and in a Facebook compatible format (.jpg, .pdf or .png).
It’s very common for brands use the reveal tab to ask fans to like their page. In these instances, the reveal tab functions as a gate, preventing non-fans from seeing certain content until they like you. Static HTML for Pages allows users to upload either a single image or more customizable HTML code.
Although often recommended as a way to increase your page’s fan count, fan gating can sometimes be a detriment for lesser-known brands, turning people away if they do not have enough information or a strong reason to like the page. To minimize this possibility, brands can offer users something tangible in return: a discount, a free download, or exclusive access to content. It’s also important to send a clear message in the visual. Some reveal tabs include an arrow and an explicit request to “Like us” in the image, just to make sure their visitors understand what’s being asked. The Like button is normally situated just about the image, but try uploading a version first to see how it works. Is the arrow pointing the right way? Have you made it clear what you’re asking? Conversely, have you over explained?
3) Add your image to your Static HTML App.
- Go to Edit Tab Settings, where it will ask you, What do you want to display? Choose Custom Image and browse your desktop for the design you’ve created.
- Under Syndication & Accessibility, choose Only Fans under Content Visibility and below that check the box under Display Custom Image to Non-Fans?
- Make sure that Static HTML is set as the default landing tab. You can find this in either Edit Info or Edit Page, under Manage Permissions. Just find Static HTML for Pages in the drop-down next to Default Landing Tab.
